The audacity of nope

Republicans are masters of projection – the art of taking your own worst qualities and painting someone else with them. Thus you have Karl Rove complaining about the Obama administration’s perpetual campaign and Newt Gingrich calling for Clinton’s head for lying about adultery while engaging in a six-year-long extramarital affair.

But the statement released today by Sen. John Cornyn may win the prize. Cornyn, in criticizing Senate Democrats for their failure to start work on a budget proposal, said:

Senate Democrats have given their game plan away: abdicate their responsibilities and focus on the next election. While their only concern is 2012, my colleagues and I are more concerned with 2024. That’s when Medicare will go broke, if not sooner. Democrats might be comfortable whistling past the Medicare graveyard, but Republicans are interested in solving problems.

Did Cornyn sleep through the 111th Congress? Abdicating the responsibility to govern in order to focus on the next election was pretty much the entire Republican strategy, especially in the Senate. Sadly, voters rewarded this rank obstructionism with control of the House. Did he miss Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell’s infamous remark, “The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president”? Whose only concern is 2012?

Cornyn must think American voters are stupid or amnesiacs.

Cornyn: Their Only Concern is 2012

Cornyn Criticizes Senate Democrats for Abdicating Responsibility for Political Expedience

U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, a member of the Senate Committees on Finance and Budget, today issued the following statement in response to Senate Democrats’ plan to forego producing a budget and ignore entitlement reform because it is politically expedient:

“Senate Democrats have given their game plan away: abdicate their responsibilities and focus on the next election. While their only concern is 2012, my colleagues and I are more concerned with 2024. That’s when Medicare will go broke, if not sooner. Democrats might be comfortable whistling past the Medicare graveyard, but Republicans are interested in solving problems.”

Senator Cornyn serves on the Finance, Judiciary, Armed Services and Budget Committees.  He serves as the top Republican on the Judiciary Committee’s Immigration, Refugees and Border Security subcommittee. He served previously as Texas Attorney General, Texas Supreme Court Justice, and Bexar County District Judge.
