Congress and the president really, really ought to be more concerned about the economic recovery than the short-term deficit, but if the deficit is so important that now even conservative Democrats are threatening global economic Armageddon by rejecting a debt ceiling increase that isn’t tied to some sort of commitment to debt-reduction, then explain this: Why is House Speaker John Boehner refusing to even have a vote on a measure that would cut the deficit by $4 billion a year?

It’s almost as if Republicans’ real goal is to cut programs they don’t like, not the deficit itself.
